Here are some of the moments that make her one of soccer’s most influential players.
The early years, a star in the making
Christine Sinclair made her debut with the Canadian national team at just 16 years old during the 2000 Algarve Cup. Choosing the number 12 jersey after her favorite athlete - Roberto Alomar, Toronto Blue Jays second baseman, Sporting a number 12 jersey.
Her leadership, clinical finishes and remarkable ability to read the game made it hard for anyone to deny that Canada had a generational talent in the making.
Scoring her way to victory
From there, Sinclair's career quickly became studded with unforgettable moments on the world stage - having more exposure on a global scale. In 2002, she helped Canada reach the final of the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship, scoring ten goals in the tournament.
In the 2012 London Olympics Sinclair cemented her legacy by leading Canada to a bronze medal when she scored a hat-trick against the United States in the semifinals. In 2012 Her 23 goals in 22 games earned her a record for most goals scored by an individual in a calendar year.
Scoring is what she does best
In January 2020, Christine became the all-time leading goal scorer in international soccer with 190 goals scored throughout her career. An unmistakable achievement when you consider that international superstar Lionel Messi has 106 goals and Christiano Renaldo is holding the men’s world record at 129. It’s hard to deny her talent when you consider how big the gap in numbers is, and how many times Christine was able to score an average of 1.7 goals per game.
Leading Canada to Olympic Gold
One of the crowning achievements of Sinclair’s career came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021 due to the pandemic). As the captain of the Canadian team, she led her country first to two bronze medals and then to their first-ever gold medal win in women’s soccer. The historic moment showcases the impact that Christine has had in propelling Canadian soccer into the spotlight.
Off the field: inspiring the next generation
Sinclair’s influence extends beyond the pitch. Helping young women pursue their dream in sports, her foundation Girls With Goals continues to support female youth soccer players. By obtaining resources and mentorship in order to continue playing, her leadership, humility, and dedication to the game now extends onto the field with your students, daughters, and nieces.
