In the world of sports, where achievements are often measured in trophies and titles, Andrea Neil is making her impact through a purpose-driven and transformational leadership approach to coaching. Her journey from an all-around athlete to an educator and content creator on SportsShare, is not only a testament to her personal accomplishments but a reflection of her deep commitment to nurturing ethical sports environments. As a captain, Andrea helped Canada to their best-ever fourth-place finish at the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup. As she’s pivoted her career from international soccer star to exclusive educator, Andrea shares her understanding of how coaches' thinking, emotions, and actions have a direct impact on their athletes.

A Legacy of Excellence and Leadership

Andrea Neil’s illustrious career in sports is marked by significant milestones and achievements. Beginning as a Canadian Junior National Badminton Team member, she transitioned to soccer at 17 and represented Canada on the Women’s National Soccer Team for over two decades. Participating in five FIFA World Cups—four as an athlete and one as an assistant coach—she became a pioneer in Canadian soccer, culminating in her induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and receiving the Canadian Order of Sport.

Her academic pursuits further enrich her practical experiences. She holds a UEFA ‘A’ European Professional Coaching License from Italy and a degree in Human Kinetics from the University of  British Columbia. Beyond the field, Andrea has provided expert commentary for TSN radio during three major FIFA Women’s World Cup and Olympic tournaments, showcasing her comprehensive understanding of the sport.

Transformational Leadership and Ethical Awareness

Andrea’s approach transcends traditional coaching. Her experience as an international athlete, coach and mother drives her work to support the development of other leaders. Using her own experience and educational background Andrea uses her profound understanding of movement, psychology and leadership to optimize performance both in sport and beyond.

We Cannot Change What We Cannot See…

By highlighting the importance of awareness and understanding Andrea believes that the foundation for personal and collective growth and transformation is through illuminating the unseen aspects of our thinking, emotions and actions. As a content creator and SportsShare Educator, she strives to understand the potential impacts this has on ourselves and others and aims to empower individuals to navigate wins and losses in life with greater clarity and integrity.

The Coaching Compass: Guiding with Empathy and Positivity

Several years ago, through her Coaching and Consulting business, Andrea developed a framework called The Coaching Compass.  The Coaching Compass takes insights from her career as an international athlete, captain, coach, and advocate and combines them with advanced studies in coaching, leadership, and human kinetics. A unique combination that teaches leaders how to create growth-focused environments that foster empathy and positivity.  Andrea’s multidimensional perspective helps her train and support well-rounded leaders - so that their coaching is effective both tactically and ethically.

“The Coaching Compass offers a unique perspective of player development and coaching the player as a whole. It guides you through the process of personal reflection and helps you develop the self-awareness you need to see how you’re currently coaching and explore a more meaningful process.”

For over 10 years, Andrea has advocated and supported individuals who have been significantly harmed by unethical leadership in sports. Last year, she testified twice before the Government of Canada parliamentary committees on the safe sport crisis.

“By promoting a process-oriented approach to coaching and leadership development, I work with leaders, coaches, and athletes to explore their motivations, thinking, emotions, and the ethical implications of their decisions and actions. My vision is for those in leadership roles to embody elevated purpose, empathy, integrity, and a commitment to bettering our world, not just in theory but through tangible actions.”
