Does Anybody Know who got the first Pick in the WNBA draft and Does Anyone really care?

wnba-logo.jpgWomen’s basketball. What a hilarious thought that is. Women playing basketball. Isn’t that an oxymoron or something? Well part of that is right.

Who cares? You can just bet the jock dad that has a daughter and he wants her to play is putting on his best straight face and saying, “Come on honey, let’s go to the college tonight and watch the girls’ team play.” Tough for him to swallow his pride from his playing days and sit in the bleachers and talk about what a crisp pass that was or how fast the game is. He’s dying inside. This is bad stuff. However, if he shows interest maybe she will go out for the team and some basketball is better than no basketball.

He might even volunteer to coach his daughters’ team until she gets to school ball. Now that is a scene. First practice he wants to run some 5 man weave (wait, can I say man?). Next let’s do some suicides. “What’s that dear, you don’t feel well?” He grimaces then he just blurts it out. “Everybody on the line.” Then he notices 2 girls in the bleachers talking. “Ladies, get out here!” They don’t move and that infuriates him. Then one of the girls quietly comes up to him and whispers something in his ear and he turns a crimson shade and drops his head. He forgot, girls have other issues.

Mom is on the sidelines in the bleachers. She is planning the next fundraiser so that the girls can get to cheerleading camp this summer. After all, it is important to the moms side of the family as they have 3 generations of cheerleaders to chat it up at the holiday get together. She tells the coach that her daughter needs to leave early as she has an appointment. They always go tanning together.

So some girls play and play well. Few people care but some go because it fills another night of the schedule. Besides the girls’ team concession stand serves good popcorn and they are giving away boys’ basketball schedules.

We need another one of those.

PS. The Los Angeles Sparks secured the first overall pick for the 2008 WNBA Draft, after winning the draft lottery on Tuesday.

Betcha didn’t even know that, did you?
