A letter to my newborn son Cole and my 0-7 fantasy football team

Dear Cole and Bums,

cole1.jpgFrom the moment I found out you both were going to be parts of my life, I was thrilled. My first son and my 2007 fantasy football team! You guys were the two things I looked most forward to this year. You both filled my life with joy and anticipation. As the days grew closer, I could not wait to see your face and your fantasy profiles on Yahoo. As the Doctor appointments went by, I started to notice that your birth and the draft were growing closer. But, I had no need to worry as your due date wasn’t until two weeks after the draft.

Then September 3rd arrived, two days before the draft. A name was picked, predraft rankings were set and excitement filled the air. We headed to the Doctor for a checkup and everything was fine. But then, the Doctor gave us the great news that they were going to induce labor the next day. Wow, is this possible? The two best days of my year back to back, my first son is born and then my much anticipated fantasy draft the next day. To put this into perspective, this would be like if they decided to move your birthday to the day before Christmas. We arrived home, and I scurried to put the finishing touches on your nursery, as well as to plan my well-conceived comebacks to the first idiot who drafted a player that was either hurt or facing animal cruelty charges. Everything was set, and then, what will always just be remembered as “THE CALL” came. The Doctor was busy the next day and needed to reschedule for the following day. For those of you just joining, your birthday just landed on Christmas. This call was followed by panic. Am I ready to be your dad and your coach? What do I take to the hospital and who do I take with the 6th pick? All questions that should have been taken care of by now.

So there is just a little change of plans, but this could still work. If they induce your birth by 9:00am, you are born by 3:00pm and then I draft via the phone, speaker style, by 6:45pm. Perfect plan, except there doesn’t seem to be a perfect plan in these situations. Everything takes time and now it looks like you won’t be here until late evening….ok, we’re still ok. Now we draft and then you are born. So, everything was set….. again. I was supposed to be conferenced in at 6:45pm to draft, but you were on a different schedule and decided you were ready to be born 2 minutes into the draft. Twenty minutes later, I was blessed with a beautiful, healthy baby boy.

vince-young.jpgIt was the happiest moment of my life. My draft went on without me using my pre draft rankings. There was a run on Quarterback’s right away so I ended up with you, Vince Young….Bust! Then I took you, Torry Holt, while many other receivers who I would have rather had were sitting there…Harrison, Moss, and Plaxico. Pre draft rankings will kill you. Along with a couple of injuries and late night feedings which have caused me to nap through crucial waiver wire times, I sit before you today, a father and a GM of a 0-7 fantasy team. I might continue to be the worst GM, but I promise to be the best Dad.

Love,
JDUBB

P.S. Next time plan, for an October baby…oh crap, when is the fantasy basketball draft!

  1. LOL! Freakin hilarious JDubb. This could scar your son for life - blame your poor fantasy season on your 1 minute old son!

  2. nice… in my opinion you take fantasy sports a lil too seriously. nice writeup though.

  3. Inmyopinion: Have a little fun man. JDubb loves his son, and loves his fantasy team. Nice write up JDubb, and I agree, you ARE the worst owner in fantasy football.

  4. I know the feeling. I’m so into fantasy sports that i could see that being an issue. you gotta think about that crap when trying to have a kid buddy

  5. You got to have the kid in June or July, no big fantasy moments then.. come on JDubbs

  6. Poor planning.

It will get you in trouble everytime!
